How to Care for Your Lace Front Wig Between Installs

You just got a flawless lace wig install and you look incredible. But how do you keep it looking that good until your next appointment? Proper wig care between installs is the difference between a wig that lasts 2 weeks and one that lasts 6. At Rich Girls Beauty Salon in North Miami Beach, we see it all — and most wig damage is completely preventable with the right routine.
Protect Your Edges and Hairline
Your natural hair underneath matters just as much as the wig on top. Before every install, make sure your edges are moisturized and healthy. Between installs, apply a lightweight oil or edge control to keep your hairline from thinning. If you notice any tension or pulling, come in sooner rather than later — a quick adjustment can prevent long-term damage.
Keep the Lace Clean
Buildup around the lace is the number one reason installs start looking off. Sweat, makeup, and adhesive residue can all accumulate along the hairline. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water along the lace edge every few days to keep things looking fresh. Avoid getting heavy products directly on the lace itself.
Sleep with a Silk or Satin Bonnet
This is non-negotiable. Sleeping without a bonnet on a lace wig is the fastest way to cause tangling, frizz, and premature shedding. A silk or satin bonnet (or pillowcase at minimum) protects the hair and keeps your style intact. For longer wigs, loosely braid or twist the hair before wrapping it up.
Moisturize the Hair Regularly
Just like your natural hair, your wig needs moisture. Use a leave-in conditioner or light oil every 2-3 days to keep the hair soft and manageable. Focus on the mid-lengths and ends, which tend to dry out the fastest. For raw virgin hair wigs like the ones we sell at Rich Girls, a little moisture goes a long way because the cuticles are still intact.
Avoid Excessive Heat
Yes, 100% human hair wigs can be flat ironed, curled, and heat styled. But doing it every day will shorten the life of your unit. When you do use heat, always use a heat protectant spray. Try heatless styling methods in between — flexi rods, bantu knots, and braid-outs all create gorgeous results without the damage.
Wash Your Wig Properly
If you're wearing your wig daily, plan to wash it every 1-2 weeks depending on how much product you use. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and follow with a deep conditioner. Always detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends and working up. Let the wig air dry on a wig stand when possible — blow drying adds unnecessary heat.
Know When to Come Back for a Reinstall
Most lace wig installs last 2-4 weeks, depending on your lifestyle and how well you maintain the unit. If you notice the lace lifting, the adhesive breaking down, or new growth pushing the wig forward, it's time for a reinstall. Don't try to force a wig to last longer than it should — that's how you damage both the wig and your natural hair.
